This race was not my cup of tea. Usually I'm supportive of anything in Hamilton. But I don't feel that race represents anywhere I like to run in Hamilton.

Anyway, I was surprised to see fellow harrier Jose at the half marathon. He had told everyone this was going to be his marathon debut. He backed out last minute. He had put some heavy duty training in the previous two months. I was curious to see where I stood next to his awesome half times.

I tried to keep Jose and the female leaders within reach the whole race. I felt strong the second half but that hill sucked alot out of me. Jose ran it real strong though. Caught one of the local Kenyan women at the end and was strong for the short flat leading to the finish.

This was a good workout leading up to the Philadelphia marathon. This race was a Pb but it didn't feel like one.

Didn't expect much from myself on this race as I've pretty much only been cross training.
Good lesson. I had way more than expected but by the time I figured that out it was too late for a PB.
From now on, I'll expect to shoot for a PB in every race, regardless of expectations

Decent race. Planned to run at goal Boston Marathon Pace; low 4:20s. Was tracking toward this until I hit Cable Hill during the last few kms. KM 20 and 21 were 20 secs above average pace up to that point, so the hill cost be about 40 secs.

Was 10 seconds slower than the first 1/2 of Chicago Marathon, but accounting for the temp, additional clothing, and course, I guess I'll take it!

Running for World Lung Association charity. Perfect weather. clear and 12 C. Same old positive splits. From 7:06 in the park to 7:40 down the West Side Hwy. Even with my Garmin virtual partner, I tried to beat that pace. The last 5 miles were no fun. New Mizuno Inspires and Superfeel insoles took away my posterior shin splint pain. I still need to learn to hold back on the first leg. Again, my Garmin was way off the official distance ant time, showing my 13.1 miles was over while I still had 1/2 mile to go.

HR 5 beats per second higher than previously at every stage, from cruising at 160 for the first third to 165 second third, edging up to 170 for the last leg and ending with a hard push up a long incline at the end for the last mile at 176 bm max vs my previous max of 171. Thanks to Sheldon who correctly predicted both a sub 1:40 time for me and a new HR max on this 200 ft below-sea-level course.
Breakfast was oatmeal and OJ at 5 a.m., Lara Bar with Gatorade at 6, and a whole banana when my stomach started grumbling 10 min before the race at 8. Had one Espresso Love Gu shot at 6 miles. Drank water not Gatorade while running.
Predictions from http://www.marathonguide.com/FitnessCalcs/predictcalc.cfm
Based on our calculations, you could perform at these times over these distances. If you are in much better shape than expected in our theoretical model, then your times will be less spread out. Conversely, if you are in worse shape then your times may be more dispersed.

MISSISSAUGA HALF MARATHON... The first race report that involves no "poor me" whining!! ;)

I decided to do this one about 10 days ago after a great Runpub run (and a couple glasses of wine). I am so glad I did! I've done decent training- 45-60km per week including two decent (20-22km) long runs since Montreal, a 10K race, and a few decent tempo runs. Oh, and one good interval session. Things are finally starting to come together! It was a perfect day to race today- probably 12 degrees at race time, sunny, a bit of wind at our backs. The Mississauga course is ideal for me as I'm a strong downhill runner.

I got to the start with very little time to spare (Gardiner closed!! Major portapotty lines!!), but that was a good thing- less time to stress. No warmup, but that turned out to be fine. I actually ran with an ipod, which I haven't done in a race for awhile. Basically a few of my really breakthrough runs have been to good playlists, so I figured I'd bring it. Again, good decision. I don't think I needed it for the first hour-ish, but I know it helped in the last 8K or so.

My race plan, which was Pat's idea, was to do 4:30-4:45 splits. Just aim for that window and see what happened. No goal numbers per se (although I was hoping for under 1:40), no pacebands, and I didn't look at most of my splits during the run.

That course is FAST. My splits for the first few km...
4:36, 4:39, 4:38, 4:27, 4:18... 22:41 for the first 5K! I felt all fast b/c I was running with the 3:10 group!! Then they took off and I was running with the 3:15 group, which STILL made me feel good... till I realized- whoa, that's pretty darn close to the pace I was going for. Holy crap that's fast. Put it out of your mind.

The next 5K were great- lots of downhill with one SMALL hill just before 8K.
9:16 (2km), 4:49 (hill), 4:21 (downhill!), 4:44 (starting to climb a bit to the only real hill at 10K... I think there was a water stop here too?). 10K split was 45:53! Hopefully that bodes well for at least breaking this year's Sporting Life time in Ottawa (I'm thinking it'll be a tough go if it's hot).

10-15km were where I first started to slow down just a bit... the 3:15 group turned away at 12K or so, and while I was a bit relieved that they disappeared before they had gotten too far out of reach, I didn't have them as a "beacon" anymore.
4:55 (hill), 4:34, 4:39, 9:34 (2km)- 15K split 1:09:37. Hopefully THIS bodes well for sub-1:10 at the Utica Boilermaker 15K (hard course)

Kilometres 15-18 were done in 14:22, and then my last three are 5:02, 5:03 and 4:58 (1100m). Finish time: 1:39:01!!

I used the Powerbar gel blasts- 2 at 6K, 2 at about 9K, and then I sort of just grazed and had one every 2K or so with my last one at 19. They were GREAT. Every time I would get a bit tired I'd pop one and think to myself that I'd had my "rocket fuel". LOL. They don't stick in your teeth, and they taste like sour gummy worms. I think they really made a difference- I didn't fade as badly as I did in Montreal.

Running with music helped towards the end- several times I focused on running to the beat and it allowed me to speed up. All the songs on my playlist were chosen because they were close to a 90/180 bpm cadence. Oh, and the racing flats were great! My new Nike Lunar Racer 2s are a 9 (I usually take an 8 1/2) and they were MUCH more comfortable throughout the race than my old ones were last year in Ottawa. I am now fully behind wearing flats for a half provided they've got room!

Overall this was a great race for me because not only am I thrilled with my time (even though probably two longer strides somewhere in there would've given me 1:38:xx), but I know I can improve. I need to continue doing my long runs and the tempo work I've been doing so that my last 5K are stronger. My next half will likely be the Waterfront half in September, unless something super fun comes up in the summer, and who knows? I'm sure there's at least a minute or two that can come off.

Really liked the course, although it is hilly it is quiet, with no cars. With the road closed there are no problems passing people or people stoppng in front of you since the course is two lanes wide. I was not expecting a PB because I havn't really trained for the race. It was a maximum effort. Average heart rate was174, max was 193 (I have never seen my heart rate above 192). Felt like stopping a couple of times, but kept going. Took a couple of small walk breaks at water stations.

Perfect weather for an August race - 19 degree high and cloudy. A real short-term confidence booster - beat my stretch goal for the race (1:43) by over two minutes and took almost 6 minutes off Half PB. Also a long-term confidence booster - have now hit pace needed (4:46/K) to BQ in Fall 2011 or in 2012 for first time in a 5K (May), 10K (July) and a Half (August.) For the first times, the goal to run this pace in a Marathon two to three years from now seems realistic for the first time.

This is the sixth time I've done a NCM event, and the third half I've run there. Coming off the Sporting Life 10K, I have to say I felt a bit aggressive going into this race. Predictor sites said anything from 1:34 to 1:38, depending on which site and whether I added a minute to my SL time. My A goal, I will now say, was to fall somewhere within that range. B goal was sub 1:40. C goal was a PB. I got goal C, so that's good.

So one night over beers at RunPub, Pat said something about how it would be cool to pace me again to the half. I joked about how I'd sign him up and get him a hotel in a heartbeat if he'd run with me again, and as it turned out he had family in Ottawa and I was able to get him a bib for free (thanks to an RM angel! ). So, he came up with us and ran with me again, which was AWESOME. It is so great to run with someone who is such a good racer and so confident in what needs to be done and when.

We started out, um, aggressively between the 1:35 and 1:40 bunnies. Not too fast, I think, but aggressively. It felt hard from 4K on. We lost 1:35 pretty quickly but hung with 1:40 for awhile, till about 10K I think. The hills in Hull over the first 10K, while not huge or terribly steep, were constant and they took a lot out of me. I didn't slow down a lot, but I did lose a couple minutes over the last 10K just based on overall fatigue and the aggressive start.

I struggled a lot for pretty much the whole race, but in a good way. This is what I'm most proud of. I raced the. whole. time. And you know what... I can say that if I was on a flatter course, or this or that, I could've achieved one of my other goals, but I honestly think that on this day, on that course, I could not have run one second faster. I pushed from the beginning and I pushed right to the end, to the point that I sorta crashed out at the end and had to be held up for a sec... After a minute or two, though, I was fine.

Final stats 1:42:02 chip time
Top 3% of my category, top 2% of women, top 8% of the race. I'll take it!

Oh, and the shoes. Those shoes are definitely 15K and under shoes. They did make me feel faster, but my feet were not happy campers for the last bit and I got some major callouses today for the pedicurist to shave off! Ew. I don't regret it, though. It was a good experiment.

The weather was absolutely perfect (+5C). I only had 2 training runs the last 2.5 weeks due to an ankle injury and laser eye surgery.

I was not expecting to beat my personal best of 1:40:58 because of my lack of training. I was hoping for 1:45. I started the race way too fast and paid for it in the second half. At the mid-point of the race my time was 48:20. I finished with 1:42:04 which is 1"06 off my personal best. Overall I am happy with my time but not happy with my pacing. I had to take 6 walk breaks in the last half of the race.

4% off my time in the same race last year.

This race was notice to me that my days of PBs just by showing up (due to progression from out of shape) are over. 88 seconds slower in this race than my PB from August. This was a race that was a marathon tune up I was not specifically training for, versus my half PB achieved last summer in a race I was focused on. I wasn't really sure what to expect for this one- my long runs have been decent but not terribly long, with my longest being 22km, and I haven't done a ton of speedwork- only a hard 20/hard 15 run the Wed after the 5K, and a couple decent tempo runs home from work. My tempo pace has been 4:40-4:45, so I hoped that on a good day, this would be a realistic estimate of my half marathon pace.

This morning I made a few gambles... #1 being my wardrobe choice of a tank top, arm warmers and shorts. It started to pour pretty much as soon as we started running, and it was cold. I was actually OK for the first 16km or so- I was cold but not uncomfortable. The last 5, I was pretty miserable and wished I had worn another layer.

Gamble #2- I started out at my estimated half marathon pace. I figured I would rather start out optimistically and flame out than start out slower. I don't regret this decision, but it didn't pay off either. I felt pretty strong at the start- I was not exactly comfortable, but not uncomfortable either. Lorne blew by at 2K or so and I just knew he was going to be way ahead of his 1:40 goal!! He was on fire and I was so happy to see that. Jeffery and I ran for a bit and chatted, which was great. Heather caught up to me at 2km or so and we hung together leapfrogging back and forth till 13 or so. Then I started to feel the effects of my lack of mileage/long runs/speedwork, and I started to slow down. I stayed fairly focused and tried to keep pushing, but I just kept fading. I tried thinking about the first 16km as "the first race" and the last 5K as the second race, and tried to call on my pain tolerance from Good Friday to get me through the last 5K. It was different though- my lungs were OK (whereas in the Good Friday 5K I was gasping)- it was my legs that I just couldn't motivate! I'm not sure honestly how much was mental and how much was physical. I was feeling more and more uncomfortable and cold as the race went on. At about 16km we must've switched directions or something, as I really noticed the wind and I felt like I was getting even wetter. I did NOT walk (I walked a couple times in Ottawa when I ran my half PB) so that's good, and I feel like I tried my best, but I'm afraid I could've done better from about 13km (when I lost Heather and Jeffery) and the end. I didn't push myself to keep up with Heather when she pressed forward, and unfortunately I have to admit I just didn't believe I had the speed to do it- I resigned myself to the fact that she was faster and thought I would flame out. Perhaps I did have the speed and I wimped out, I don't know, but honestly I have to say I need to work on both my physical strength but also my mental strength.

I finished at 1:43:04, which is 1:02 slower than my pb from last year. This isn't great, but it isn't awful either- I'm not really bummed out, but I'm not super happy either. I know my pb last year came after more long runs, more speed, and a confidence-boosting huge 10K pb, so 1 minute off isn't that bad. I'm running better right now than I was last year, though, so I was really hoping for better. Oh well. I may do the half in Mississauga, or I may just try to really bring it in the Sporting Life, Ottawa and the Boilermaker and save another half for summertime or early fall. We'll see. I know I'm capable of sub 1:40, or at least faster than 1:42- it'll just take a few more weeks of training.

i smoked this race!!!

Dec 29/09 - just reading over this years race "reports" and feel like i need to add to this report. It's funny, eventhough this race was months ago, i can still remember feeling great throughout this whole race - from start to finish. i remember looking at my watch as each km passed and how stoked (for lack of a better word) I felt that each km was under 5min. I remember the girls asking me before the race what my best 1/2 time was and telling them that about 10 years ago i ran a 1:44 XX and how i would never be able to run that time again - Well, i did this day and the feeling i get when i think of this race still makes me really happy inside and makes me smile. Its the moments like this that make the training all worth while.

Here's hoping that 2010 will bring more PB's, be injury free and maybe that Marathon goal will be reached.

Bring it!

Didn't think I'd match my Death Valley time. Very minimal training in past 7 weeks, gaining a pound per week. Forgot my HR strap!! so paced myself for 6 miles and dared myself to keep it up. Couldn't. Had some sub 7:30 splits in the middle then some sub 9:00 spilts at the end. Even walked a couple of water stops. Shame. Legs are better now. Looking forward to training properly for next half. Drizzle began right after my finish. Went to Whole Foods and got sushi and oranges and lamb and cod and squid and olives and bison steak and pineapple.

Weather was perfect - cool at the start - maybe 10 degrees, no wind. Felt good and right on track until about 11km's.. then started to slow by a couple of seconds a km and the HR was getting higher. Tried to push but still doing km's in around 5:05 and HR was way too high. Not sure what happened. Maybe because I was sick earlier in the week and the virus still wasn't out of my body?? Who knows. I didn't think I had it in me today to finish this in under 1:50. The last month and 1/2 my training sucked due to some leg issues and the week before the race I was having some weird stomach issues (no details required there). Anyway I started the race with the 1:50 pace bunny (Rayman), basically to help me keep a decent pace. Once the race started I really felt good - legs felt good, stomach issues seemed to have subsided and the whole atmosphere and excitment of the race set in. Basically i just ran on how i felt. I did keep track on my watch as to my pace but didn't worry if one km was way slower or faster than another. It wasnt' until around the 18km mark that i started to feel that real tired feeling. I pushed on and that last 500m was the absolute worst! Each 100 m seemed to take forever. finally at the last 100 m I gave all that I had. In the end I ran a 1:48:24 (chip time). Even though it wasn't a PB - i wasn't excpecting one, and I am very happy with these results.

Goals: have fun, gain experience, pace evenly in winter conditions, and hold something back (a lesson for the marathon). PE was about 85% of half marathon race effort. There were 3 waves, and I ran in the first; I've included all waves in the results. Final time was 1:48:46. The time differential: a train blocked our path for 0:02:16 at 18K, and this accounts for my Garmin splits.

Well, a 2 second PB! Race went well up to 18k, then hit a bit of a bonk and slowed down - probably cost me about a minute on my finish time. Positives; ran very strong for most of the race; made it to 18k before getting significantly fatigued (normally happens at ~13k); consistent pacing all the way through (7k in 37:29, 14K in 36:58, 21.1k in 38:54); mentally stayed in it all the way; on this day, this was close to as fast as I could have gone. Negatives; didn't eat enough before the race; paced a little too slow for the first 10k to get nearer to my goal time of 1:49:xx; maybe could have pushed a little harder in the last 1.5k. Overall though, I'm okay with this result.

Used as a training run in prep for the MCM. Went out quite strong and then decided to reign in and settle for a PB rather than really going for it for a sub 1:50 - was worried out injurt so close to my A race.

I did not train hard for this race. I was recovering from anchilles tendonitis and was very cautious. I did no speedwork. My goal was to run this race and be injury free. I reached that goad.

wow! what a crappy race. I got an IT band injury about 4 weeks before this race. I lost all the speed work gains I had made. I ran this race with a full bladder and did not have a good time. I really enjoyed the first half and was holding a good pace. I really had to empty my bladder for the last half. I finally stopped at 19K. I had jello legs, sore back and could not catch my breath. I even walked a little in the chute. this was the worst race ever. The funny thing is it is motivating me to do better and not feel that shitty while racing.

Key take aways from this race:
This was to push a faster than mary pace but hold a steady pace as long as possible. It worked. It was the most comfortable I have ever been maintaining this pace for this duration.

I actually was able to speed up near the end despite having started too fast.

Running monster hill consistently made Hogs Back a piece of cake.

Gatorade is my new crack. Used it for my fueling, save one gel and it did the trick beautifully.

If my long runs stay strong and I stay healthy, I hope to hit 4:20 or better in Philly.

Race location and route were perfect, conditions were ideal. Goal was to do a negative split, started ok with first 7k in 39 mins, 2nd 7k in 39 mins, tried to pick it up over final 7k - didn't happen. Have to figure out a way to finish stronger, no way did I start too fast, just need more endurance.

Eve - pasta, bag chips, oj, water water water
7AM - 1/2 bagel w pbutter (hard time getting it down!), oj, coffee
9AM - banana
---------------------------------
Plan was to follow the 2.15 pace bunny and see what pace felt like. A tad too fast so dropped to plan b - keep the first half under 7.00/km which would improve over PEC. Was running faster though and decided to stick with that pace and see what happened.
Felt good throughout. Slight tightness in back left leg at about 15k - didn't last. 2 gels, Eload, water.
Picked it up a little with 5km or so to go, more at 3, and 2, and laid out all I had left with 1 to go.
Next goal...??....2.10??

Happy with result. Goal was basically just to finish, hopefully decently, expected something around 2:15 to even 2:20. Didn't train properly (no hills, no speed), nursing sore knee & cold. Ran it carefully & easy. Good results, all things considered.

Lots of fun being the 2:15 Pace Bunny!
Did 10 & 1's with a group of 6 women.
Had to pick up pace in last 3K to make pace time.

I’m going to keep this short, as this really isn’t about the run, it’s about the cause. The run was just a celebration of having accomplished the goal to support the Canadian Diabetes Association. All that matters now is that I am done! This means tomorrow I get to go see my beloved sister whom I have not seen since months before her Type I diagnosis this time last year!

As many know this was a very questionable event for me, and I didn’t know if I should even stick with the half distance, after having already switched to it from the full. However, I am so glad I chose to stick it out! I started, I finished, and I did NOT PW! I had a great run, with only a bit of tightness in my ITB’s, and no real pain in my knees whatsoever - my ankle was completely healed from the spill down the stairs, and gave me no issues at all.

I got to run for some time with Tracy, who is doing her Team Diabetes full at Dublin in 2 weeks! I was so glad to meet one of the runners I would have been running with, under optimal circumstances. We ran together for a good portion of the run.

I ran a clear negative split and enjoyed the gradual uphill climb for the first half of the run (it was all downhill or flat from the turnaround to the finish). I didn’t take a walk break until 12km! I walked short spurts at several water stations, but other than that only had a couple of walk breaks from 12km to the finish. I finished somewhere around 2:18:xx (by the clock). I don’t know where the official results are posted just now.

Ian and the girlies were there to see me at the start and finish, and I got to celebrate with a number of other Team D participants. We’ll have a celebration dinner this evening!

It’s over now and time to celebrate. If anyone would like to contribute to the cause still, I am able to continue to collect donations. Perhaps I’ll carry over the “extra” to another Team Diabetes event, and someday run that full!

I’ll post some pix later. Smile

Great run!
Had bagel with pb, oj, and coffee @ 7am. Banan @ 9. Race started at 10.
Started out nice and easy, and tried to keep it that way, feeling afraid I'd go out and burn out. Bit of twitching in right calf and tightness veering on cramping in left inner leg. So tried to relax with each stride and keep that cramping in it's place. I knew if it happened I'd be walking. Kept things under control and kept the speed nice but picked up slowly. Then with about 7k to go I decided that 7 k isn't that much so I was going to give it a shot and pumped up the speed a bit. I was feeling good. After that all cramping stuff went away. Great pace, feeling fit, got to about 2k to go...getting tired....1k almost done, and really had to push to keep it going all the way to the finish line. Thought I was going to puke on the way :)
Now what - aiming for 2.15 over the next year.

My first half marathon. Started out very strong and ran the first 10K in about an hour and 10 minutes. Then got really bad foot cramps and had to sit them out twice. Managed to catch up with the 3-hour pace bunny and stayed just ahead of her to the finish.
