Marathon # 5

My last big race before Pascal was born. Went in a van with 9 of the Hamilton Harriers. It was a blast. Not your standard boring course. Good mix of elevation and scenery. Urban, park , riverside and suburban philly.

This race was a 5 minute PB ran tight and tactical for the first half which was windy. 1:25 at the half.
Took the lead of a small pack of elite women and a few masters and hammered the second half in 1:24. Felt very loose and fast. Like I was driving a car could speed up or ease off at will.

Ran the last 10k under 39 minutes. Felt on top of the world. The last 2k still hurt real bad though.
Enherited an awful nickname after the race
"big dawg"

A great race and weekend.

This was a lesson in Hydration...

Flew from Sacremento to Toronto on 11/16
Toronto to OKC on 11/17...drove to Tulsa on 11/18.

Totally underestimated the loss of hydration for all of this travel.......

On pace for 2:42, when both hamstrings cramped at mile 23....last 3 mile splits ave 8:30/mile while having to stop and walk just to stretch the best that I could.

Needed 2 bags of IV solution to get my body to stop the violent cramping at the finish line.

Tough course, windy day, last 8k was pretty much incline and against the wind, not much too steep just long inclines.
3:05!!! I was pretty close to 3:00 until the last 8k it was just too much hill and wind to hold pace.
That course wasn't going to give up many sub 3's today, not easily. 14th overall, I was 20th at half.

The race was all on a closed highway, it started to suck after a while. At about 26k we ran into the back of the pack of the 1/2 marathoners, so after that I was avoiding them and had no idea who I was racing against anymore, which was a bit motivational. It was organized very well and marshaled great too, nice to not have to worry about any cars or pedestrians, roads were totally shut down.

Not much to say about this one. Was aiming for sub 3 and after that I really didn't care what the time was. Very tough course, lots of cramping, lots of hills. I've got lots of work to do if I am to before Boston. LOTS OF WORK.
My number one goal right now is to get my foot better. I will not run another step until I go a week pain free. I'll cycle, do core stuff, yoga, and hit the weights until that point.
If I am going to continue to run marathons in BC, I have to get used to the idea that they are WAY tougher than in Ontario, and train accordingly.

Drank water with nuun consistently throughout the race. Gels every 5k, very hilly, started to feel right quad at about 27k and both quads were sore by about 37k. Thinking back I should have made the decision at about 8k left to really push it and see if I could have gotten there. Gotta go hard the next one on the last 5k regardless of how you feel. Everything held together but right knee was quite sore the afternoon of the race. It only lasted until the next day. Quads were still sore on Wednesday as were the calves.

Disappointing day. I was right on track for 3:15 to half way. At about 27k, I wasted to gels trying to open them and that is where things started to unravel, both mentally and physically. By 30k the quads really tightenned up, I cramped all over, had stomach cramps, so decided to coast in and not injure the foot more. Boston was not going to happen, so I just settled for an 8 or 9 minute PB. Bottom line is I wasn't trained well enough for a rolling hills type of course. I've run 3 marathon distance training runs at 4:40 pace, but on a rolling course, that gets you squat. I'll be better next time.

Best marathon value ever - a $45 early entry got me a great medal, a technical T not littered with advertising and entry into the small field race that was well planned, organized and executed, that had 21 aid stations and had purse money that amounted to $59.52 per entrant. Can't beat that. Great organization and as mentioned by others, this was the best-pyloned course ever. Only downside on a rainy day was that much of the course was on the well-pyloned side of open roads but hard rain meant running through lots of puddles where grates could not handle the volume of water quickly. Course got progressively tougher from 90 minutes on as a result due to pooling of water.

Didn't quite get the time I was pacing toward at the start (miss by 1:52) and missed the even splits that I wanted as a result - but great otherwise. A PB by 7:46, my first sub-3:45 and first sub-3:40. Pacing was good relative to the field on the rapidly deteriorating course - I passed five runners on the second loop but was not passed by anyone.

While I've pushed my fading point further in each of my three marathons and reduced the magnitude of impact, my pace dropped off marginally after 28K and moreso in the steady uphill from 39K-41K - I may move my longest run up from 32K in future marathon training as a result, my pacing was appropriate based on McMillan equivalents so I think I need to focus on preparing for the back quarter of my marathons with longer runs as my next improvement measure. Torrential rain to start , followed by high humidity, wind and than heat. Really had to tough this one out to squeek out a PB. Almost got kicked off the course by a cop at the 40k mark for not having my bib # on. Happy with the guts this one took.

Great event. Very pleased with my performance as well. Five-and-a-half minutes better than my only prior marathon, I ran the entire race without walk breaks and I had no upset stomach at any point. All improvements from my debut.

I was pleased with my pacing, which was planned at 5:18/K on flat portions of the course. The only significant downhills turned out to be the first 4K (*) of the quick and scenic 21.5K to 27.5K stretch on the Red Hill Valley Parkway. Splits through 32K - 5:23; 5:19; 5:15; 5:14; 5:15; 5:13; 5:14; 5:13; 5:09; 5:19; 5:15; 5:16; 5:21; 5:23; 5:17; 5:22; 5:18; 5:11; 5:28; 5:18; 5:13; *5:06; *4:51; *4:54 ; *5:02; *5:11; 5:16; 5:20; 5:21; 5:15; 5:22; 5:18

With only one long run over 24.5K in my marathon training program that was planned to be longer and higher volume but abbreviated due to injury, I did not know what to expect toward the end. And my hip flexors did get tighter and tighter in the last 10K around the beach and particularly the cool last 6K in front of the water. My splits in the next 10 full K after nailing the first 32K in or around 5:18/K - 5:32; 5:35; 5:32; 5:43; 5:50; 5:59; 6:03; 6:09; 5:57; 5:57.

I am assuming lack of mileage base was a contributing factor to stiffness at the end as my cardio seemed fine and I was not without energy. So while very happy with the result, I did leave a few minutes on the course for future improvement. But I never even thought of walking at any point as things got tough, let alone walking it in, so my mindset is drastically improved.

My 4:22 positive split (approx. 1:51:38/1:56:00 halves) is headed in the right direction from my 11:35 postiive split in my debut (1:50:48/2:02:23 halves) but room for improvement there as well.

My first Marathon! Some low blood sugars (that lasted for almost an hour). Got very dizzy the last 6-7 K's and almost puked the last 3... but, I still managed to sprint fast the last 5-600 meters over the finish line (that was fun). Overall I'm happy with my time. Heck, happy I finished a full marathon at all with Diabetes type 1!
The time on my own watch that I started crossing the start line and stopped every time I either checked my blood sugar or had to walk (because I was dizzy) was 3:31:45.

7 AM Start.

Official time to tenth of a second - 3:53:10.5.

First marathon, took too quick a pace given the heat; the forecast for partially cloudy turned into sun on a course with little shade. Hit the wall big time, stomach went at 27K, energy gone at 28K. Was disappointed with fade over last 14K but it turned out the whole field faded in the sun - managed just a 5:59/K pace 30K-42.2K but placing for this split (1232/3578) close to full race placing (1220/3578.)

Have since read the results of a 2007 study that indicated Marathon paces slow by 3% for every 4.5 degrees Celsius over 10 degrees and will prepare accordingly. 1:50:48/2:02:23 halves will surely be my worst positive split ever.

I apologize in advance if this sounds like a sob story. Truth be told, that's pretty much what I've been doing for the last day. I know it's not the end of the world- I finished, it's just a race, it's not something more than that. However, I still am not really able to talk much about it without breaking down. Here's what happened... the only thing I ask is that please- please- don't say "that's still a great time". No it wasn't... not when you hoped to go 18 minutes faster and when you lost all 18 minutes in the last 10K. Yes I was still under 4 hours, but please keep in mind that the only satisfaction I got from finishing was that I didn't walk off the course.

So- my training was stellar. I enjoyed the whole process even though it was really physically draining. There was one week where I was ready to pack it in, but I took a cutback week and was back in the saddle pretty much right awa. Pat Menzies agreed to coach me in the spring, and he was fantastic. He gave me some excellent workouts and advice without making the process more complicated than it needed to be. Basically my training was the "run a lot, run long, run hard, run easy to recover" old school method. I really enjoyed it. I didn't do hill repeats, opting instead to run up some really big hills in most of my long runs and in my weekly runs. Instead of traditional mile or km interval workouts, we did a lot of longer intervals (2 x 15-25 minutes at just faster than half marathon pace, which for me was about 4:30-4:45) and progression runs (say 10-12km, first half at 5:00 ish, last half 4:45 ish). It made a lot of sense for me, as in each of these hard workouts I found myself mentally battling to get through the last little bit, just as you need to in a marathon. Basically I feel like I trained as hard as I could, and I can't really think of what more I could have done this summer to prepare.

Fast forward to yesterday. Last weekend, I got a cold, but fought most of it off by Wednesday. I was a bit sinusy till Saturday, but woke up pretty clear-headed yesterday considering I had only gotten about an hour and a half of sleep. I decided I was going to shoot for 3:38, which is a 5:10/km pace (easy math!) and it gave me a bit of a buffer in case I slowed at the end. For the first 25K, I felt absolutely fantastic. I felt like I was holding back just a little bit, as I was always either right on my pace or a few seconds ahead. I hit the half at 1:48:55 and 30K at 2:36, again bang on, and it was starting to feel kind of hard. But, that's normal, I figured. I thought to myself "I have trained for this, I can do this, ignore the fatigue. Your body is telling you to slow down- don't let it". At 32, I was at 2:41:10, still right on, but it was really starting to hurt. Seriously, it was happening that quickly. By 33 I was behind by I forget how much, but several seconds (maybe a minute?). I was suffering. At 35 I realized I had 41 minutes to run 7.2km and I got a bit of a boost, thinking "OK I can do this- just keep going". I picked it up a bit, but not as much as I thought I had. I was suffering more and more- my body just seemed to shut down. At 37, I realized when I saw that I would need to run the last 5.2km in 25 minutes that it was over. It was pretty much a death march from there- my legs hurt so much and were so heavy that I couldn't even pick up my feet. I was doing this horrible shuffle that I am paying for big time today.

I began to feel just awful- I felt like I had wimped out, that I just wasn't tough enough. I felt like I had let Pat down, who had been so wonderful all summer, and had run with me many times on an ankle that was practically broken in June. I kept thinking I should be able to just suck it up like he can, but I couldn't. Every time I saw someone I knew, especially people who had come into the city to cheer, or people who had been so excited for me all along, I burst into tears. It was awful- I don't normally complain too much on runs, opting instead to seethe in my head. :) Poor Pat... he deserves a medal for not whacking me one. Worst of all, though, I kept thinking about my best friend Mel, who was waiting for me at the end. She hopped back on the training wagon this summer so we could run Boston together (not a stretch for her), and I had let her down. When I saw her at the 200m to go sign I just broke right down.

At this moment in time, I never want to do that again. I really liked training for it, but it was such an emotional hit after putting that much work in, and feeling like there was nothing more that I could've done. The last time I tried to BQ pretty much the exact same thing happened, but it happened earlier. However I had no business trying for 3:40 that time, and I knew it, so I wasn't that upset by my result. This time, my recent 10K, half marathon and 5K races respectively predicted marathon times of 3:20 (ha ha), 3:35 and 3:31, so I honestly thought that I should be able to do it. Maybe I'm just not cut out for racing marathons.

I think my next move, after I recover, is going to be to run some shorter races and get some confidence back. If I recover quickly and well enough, I may try to go sub 1:40 at the Hamilton half. Or I may shoot for sub 21 at a 5K in December. So, I know it's not the end of the world... again sorry for the sob story. I still love running and I still love racing. Someday maybe I'll do another marathon, and when I do I'm sure I'll still be shooting for Boston. I still don't think it's unrealistic. It'll probably be awhile, though.

Right hips and left knee really started aching at Mile 10. Probably because we stepped up the pace from 9:54 miles to 8:40 miles. Too fast I think. Pacing was all over the place.

Lesson learned.

Last 3 weeks of training I did not want to run (very unusual for me), legs were very sore and tired since mid Sept., kept pace for first half, then, felt pain in left hip, then, all down left leg, couldn't put weight on it, then right leg started to hurt also, walked most of second half. Very disappointing. :(
